We recently remodeled our kitchen and I was insistent that we include smart lighting under our cabinets and in our glass fronted upper cabinets and couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The LEDs are quite bright, enough to really light my kitchen, so the versatility of setting the lights anywhere from 0 to 100% is one of my favorite features. The other is being to turn the lights on or off from basically anywhere in the house so I never have to walk into a dark kitchen and can turn them off after I am in my bedroom getting ready for bed. We then went on to upgrade our ceiling fans so that both the fans and their lights are voice activated and can be operated independently from one another. We did this by purchasing a Bond device that allows our Echo Dots to control any ceiling fan that has a remote. It works with up to six fans so we can control all of the fans in the house not just the two in the kitchen. What a convenience to not have to hunt for the remote anymore! Smart plugs have made it easy for us to control other items like the lights in my china cabinet, lamps, small appliances etc. And we accomplished all of this without purchasing and setting up a hub (although that may be something we do in the future if the upgrade we want we requires it) and it was as easy as you described in your post. So congrats on your first step into transforming your your home into a smart home. I know you are going to love it and I look forward to your series.
