Christmas will be here before we know it and these engraved leather gift tags are a great way to top off those gifts! Since they also double as Christmas ornaments, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving! I’m partnering with my friends from Dremel today to show you how I made these custom gift tags using the Stylo rotary tool.

The Dremel Stylo is small but mighty. Thanks to the included bits, it can do so many things from sanding to engraving to polishing. I use mine all of the time and love the lightweight feel of it for small projects.

3″ embroidery hoops
tooling leather
faux greenery
faux berries
twine
hot glue gun
Dremel Stylo fitted with smallest engraving bit
scissors
wire cutters

How To Make Leather Engraved Gift Tags

Time needed: 15 minutes.

Leather Engraved Gift Tags

Cut the leather
Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut a piece of leather approximately 3/4″ wide and 3 1/2″ long.
Mark out your design
With the Dremel turned off lightly draw your word, design, or name into the leather. If you mess up, just rub the leather to wipe away and start over. It took me a few tries to finally be happy with it.
Engrave leather
Turn on the Stylo and adjust the speed to the fastest setting. I found this gave me the most control over the leather. Lightly engrave the leather over the design you sketched. Once finished wipe away any “dust” on the leather strip.
Fit the leather into the hoop
Loosen the embroidery hoop almost all of the way and take apart. Set the leather strip in the upper half of the hoop, then fit the outer ring back over and tighten.
Add greenery and berries
Cut the berry stems with wire cutters and pull off or cut small pieces of greenery to fit on the bottom of the hoop. I couldn’t find my wire cutters, but the small cutters on my needle nose pliers did the trick.
Glue the greenery to the hoop
Using a hot glue gun, glue the greenery and berries to the bottom of the hoop. Be careful not to touch the glue before it cools. Add more greenery if desired.
Add twine
Cut a piece of twine approximately 18″ long and wrap it around the bottom of the hoop, leaving a 2″ tail at the beginning and end.
Tie off twine
Tie off the twine when you are finished wrapping it. Cut off the excess with scissors. Add additional twine to the top for hanging.
