DIY State Pride Cheese Board

I’m excited to share today 101+ Birthday Gift Ideas for your Friends, including my DIY State Pride Cheeseboard.  I am joining forces with Kristen Duke in her Birthday Celebration Week along with over 100 talented bloggers sharing lots of inexpensive ideas and free printables! I love wine and cheese, and so do many of my friends!  I was inspired to make this State Pride Cheeseboard after seeing this France Cheese Board from Anthropologie.  I thought it would be perfect to make one out of my home state of Arizona.  It is the perfect gift for the person who as everything or for your friends who love to entertain.  You can give the cheeseboard as a gift in itself, or package it up with some yummy wine, cheese, crackers, and meat like I did here.

  This cheese board is so easy to make and can be customized for any state, country, or shape!

I purchased some small pieces of hickory from my local lumber yard for a few dollars.  The edges on the wood were already cut with a straight edge, so I was able to easily just glue and clamp them together.  I let the pieces dry for a good 24 hours before I cut my design.

I found a silhouette of Arizona that wasn’t too terribly detailed and cut it out on my Cricut.  Obviously, the size you choose to cut out depends on the size of the wood you have as well as the state you want to cut.  I cut this one at 13″ long.

Once I had my design traced onto the wood, I used my jigsaw to cut it out.

Once it was all cut out, I just sanded the top, bottom and edges until everything was smooth.  I used a belt sander on the top and bottom and just sanded the edges by hand.

Once I had everything sanded smooth, I cleaned the board off with a damp cloth and then applied butcher block conditioner (affiliate link) to all sides of the cheese board.  

You can keep the cheese board for yourself, but it is such a great gift too!  Like I said, you can give it as-is, or you can create a fun gift bag or basket filled with wine, cheese, meats, and crackers.  I promise your friends will love this gift!
